Working in an older building is always a challenge. The whole walls aren’t plumb, floors sag, framing is inconsistent, and often times the houses are not insulated. For this project we were lucky enough to work with clients who were every bit as focused on details as we were. From leveling the walls and floors to choosing the appropriate fixtures. The result is simple beauty. We strive to achieve this with all our projects.

One of our favorite parts of work is getting to work in the historic buildings of Boston. This bath was one of a couple we did in brownstone in Brookline. The architecture in this building was beautiful and unlike anything you see in new builds. #thebogartfinish #homesolutionsyoucantrust #boston #bostoncontractor #construction #brookline #bathroomremodel #brownstone #marble #basketweave #customcabinets #glassshower #architecture #interiors #bathroom #interiors #interiordesign @sherylkalisphotography
Open plan concepts are all the rage these days, which means tearing down walls to make larger rooms. A consequence of this is uneven walls. Over the lifetime of a home different contractors will have applied different materials, using different techniques, which will result in walls of different thickness in each room. This creates a problem when trying to marry the walls of the rooms together or creating a smooth surface to hang cabinets on.
*
For this kitchen renovation the homeowner asked us to tear down a wall between the kitchen and dining room, and to hang new cabinets. After tearing down the wall we found two things. 1. The walls in the dining room were thicker than the kitchen. 2. The thickness of the walls in the kitchen were not a standard Sheetrock thickness, as they had used wire mesh and plaster instead. *
To solve this problem we decided that we needed to tear out the plaster and lath on the kitchen wall that would marry with the dining room wall. We then measured the thickness of the dining room wall and found it was 3/4 inch. This meant we needed to pad the studs in the kitchen 1/4 inch, so that we could hang 1/2 inch drywall (3/4-1/4=1/2) and achieve the 3/4 inch thickness of the dining room wall. We did this by cutting 1/4 inch strips from a 2x6 and fastening them to each wall stud with an 1 1/4 siding nail. We find that when fastening thinner strips of wood, a smaller nail is better than a framing nail, which can split thinner wood. We did the same process around the area we are hanging the new cabinets, in order to have a smooth and flat surface to hang out cabinets on.
*
While this process is quite involved and takes time to complete, it is essential for the finished product. Contractors can try and hide mistakes at the beginning of the process, but it will always show at the end and they will spend countless hours and come up with convoluted ways to hide the mistake. Taking the time to do the job right the first time around saves on cost and results in a product that will last for generations.
Same problems. New century.
Oftentimes when we open up walls for a renovation, previous homeowners or contractors will have left a little time capsule. It’s always nice to find old newspapers (does anyone even have a physical newspaper on site anymore?) and reflect on what was going on in the world when the home was last worked on. This is a @bostonglobe from May 7, 1989. The first thing I noticed were the front page articles about Russia and the Israel- Palestine conflict. Some things never change.
Have you ever found anything interesting hidden in the walls of your renovations?

This was a fun project we did for a client who wanted the option of enjoying the game on the big screen in their formal living room, but didn't want to house a TV on a daily basis. We put in a custom projector crane and an In-ceiling projector screen. All of the components will be painted to match ceiling. The system includes surround sound and subwoofer in the wall.

When this homeowner moved into her new apartment, the kitchen cabinets were looking tired and outdated. We have been asked to do a simple replacement of the cabinets to freshen up the place. James is always happy to oblige and get his hands dirty, before making it look like new again. We pride ourselves on keeping the homeowner happy by keeping a clean job site and our work footprint as small as possible. Combine that with some good planning by our team and we will be out of there in no time, so the homeowner can get back in the kitchen.
